Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)

Located 31 miles (50 km) south of Kuala Lumpur, this airport, completed in 1998, reflects Kuala Lumpur's recent development--its layout and buildings are futuristic, sparkly, occasionally leafy, and even monolithic (see the Web site's photos). The airport serves international flights. Subang/Sultan Abul Aziz Airport, which Kuala Lumpur International replaces, now serves domestic flights only.

Generally, taxis are pre-paid, the amount being determined by the city zone of your destination. Purchase your ticket from the booth outside the arrival hall and present it to the driver.

The pre-paid ticket helps you avoid haggling over a price and unpleasant surprises regarding the cost. Fare to the city center will be about 70-85 ringgit ($19-$23) and will take 30 to 45 minutes for the journey; longer, of course, if the traffic's backed-up. There is a 50% surcharge for taxis between midnight and 8 A.M.

Express buses run between KLU and Nilai, Kuala Lumpur, Subang and Shah Alam. They are available from 5 A.M. to 11 P.M. daily, and can be boarded at Block C of the car park. Depending on your destination (you might want to check an interactive city map), the buses leave either every 15 minutes or every half hour. The trip takes up to two hours (in heavy traffic). The Express Bus company offers a Luxury Coach which costs about 25 ringgit ($7) one-way.
